Buyer’s guide
Three terms you’ll meet when ordering carpet yarn
Long-staple yarn
Yarn spun from longer fibres. Compared with short-staple yarn it is usually more even and stronger, with less hairiness. Bayer Kashan specialises in long-staple yarns.
Hi-bulk
The yarn is spun from a mix of shrinkable and stable fibres, then treated with steam. The shrinkable fibres contract and crimp the others, giving a lofty, light, soft yarn with better cover.
Heat-set
The twist of the plied yarn is fixed with heat and steam so it stays ‘locked’. The carpet pile then does not untwist after weaving or in use, and keeps its shape and definition.
The mill currently produces yarns equivalent to 50/3, hi-bulk or heat-set.
